Bottle painting

Still life painting of a bottle on a ledge at Hazelwood House, Sligo.  This painting was painted from a photograph taken by Val Robus who kindly gave me permission to paint it

Task:  To create a painting from these six photographs.

Here goes....................

(1) After photocopying the images I finally settled on this composition on an A3 page. This is vital as I need to be sure how everything fits. By glueing pictures on to the page it helps to put all of the components together.

I'm aiming to have all of these images blending in together. I may not use all of the smaller images. This can be decided along the way.

(2) I started with the furthest things away which is always the sky followed by the mountain and landscape background - in this case, Grange County Sligo. As all of the images are more or less in place I can concentrate on converting the black and white shades into colours.

(3) Mixed media comes in to play here. The base of the thatch cottage is painted in Raw Umber acrylic as this is fast drying and will act as a suitable base for the upcoming thatch colours and texture

(4) Coming along nicely now. The cottage is heavily textured with white paint and some fine sand for extra thick texture. I just need to put in the second chimney and window sill.

(5) The man with the scythe with Moran's Bar in background. Some more blending required here mostly from the road to sky and field to sky. I will be starting the final part shortly.

(6) Almost there. Fields and road worked on today. A lot of enhancements to be added to the road and near field. Just have to work on the 1940's school and swap it for the present day building.

(7) I've just put in Grange village as it looked in the late 1940's. All that has to be done now is to balance the painting on the left hand side to the left of the man. A tree and an extra house will be added which will blend well with the rest. More detail will be added to his hands and grip. Our original school house photograph is incorrect as it happens to be a picture of Ballyconnell school house in Maugherow. I'm now just waiting to see just ONE photograph of Grange schoolhouse pre 1962.

(8)  ALMOST FINISHED! (I think) This is Grange and it's surrounds in the 1950's.... taken from 5 black and white photos supplied with one inaccurate one (the school house) We couldn't find any of the old 1950's primary school in Grange so it had to be painted from several local past pupils descriptions. If there is anyone out there with a photograph of the school pre 1962, please let me know. I may have to alter it ....

(9) FINISHED and FRAMED: Touch-up time. Just added second chimney, the river that ran by the school (now piped) school yard with outhouses back bushes, bicycle at house and cock of hay in the field.

MULLAGHMORE HARBOUR , CO SLIGO

Mullaghmore Harbour 2

I saw this lovely photograph taken by Val Robus but noticed that there was building work going on near the Beach Hotel. I went down myself and took a more up-to-date photograph from the same spot.

Finished.... I forgot to photograph the middle stages. I think I got a bit carried away.

THE ARCHITECTS OF THE STATE (MY HUMBLE OPINION OF COURSE)

As 2016 is a special year I thought it might be a nice idea to do something like this

The three men below James Connolly, EamonDeValera and Michael Collins will be painted individually and will be displayed as three paintings together with a shared background running from one to another. A type of triptych I suppose.
